Word Focus for the Year: Praise

One Word PraiseI started a couple of years ago choosing a word to focus on for one whole year.  Throughout the year I keep a small journal with me, so I can write down ideas, quotes, Scripture, thoughts, or anything that I come across that strikes me and has to do with the year’s word.

There is kind of a movement surrounding choosing one word to focus on for a year.  Often it has to do with ditching resolutions and simplifying to just picking a word.  I get it.  But I do also love making resolutions each year.  Sometimes I follow through and achieve those goals, and other times I don’t.  I don’t get discouraged by this usually, by the grace of God (There was a time when I did, but now I call myself a recovering perfectionist).

What the One Word idea brings to my life is focus.  I enjoy looking back and discovering all the Lord taught me about this one subject.  Some of the lessons were hard, some were fun, and some are still in the works.

The first year I chose JOY.

The second year I chose WORSHIP.

And this year I have chosen PRAISE.

I just didn’t feel like I had learned enough about worship last year (as if that is possible anyway).  There was so much to learn, and I thought it would be interesting to focus this year specifically on the act of praising the Lord.

Plus, to be honest, I feel like this is a time to be very intentional about praising the Lord throughout each day because sometimes I just really feel overwhelmed.  Praising Him and recognizing Him helps me refocus and realize that He is in control and helps me keep life in the proper perspective.

I don’t want to get bogged down with the temporal that I see right now in front me.  I want to praise Him and focus on the eternal, the relationships, and remember to be thankful.

There is much to learn this year, and I am looking forward to it.  Do you have a word you have chosen to focus on this year?  It’s not too late…

“I will give to the LORD the thanks due to his righteousness, and I will sing praise to the name of the LORD, the Most High.” (Psalm 7:17 ESV)
